Gender equality means harder female criminals
Prison inspector Nils Killingberg warns that Norway needs to update its prison system in order to adjust to the increasing number of female offenders, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reports. The difference between the sexes in crime terms is vanishing, and gender equality is behind the shift, he argues.
"Before women were not as prominent in major drug and violent crimes," Killingberg, head of the women's section of Trondheim prison, told NRK.
Now an increasing number of women are ending up behind bars and the pressure on Norway's women's prisons is unprecedented.
"I believe we need to build more prisons, and prisons specifically for women," Killingberg said.
Dan Strømme, director at Bredtvet Prison, said that women are also committing more serious crimes than before.
"If you examine the grounds for sentencing women are in every category - 37 percent of women in prison have committed narcotics offenses and seven percent are convicted of robbery and murder," Strømme said.
