ONE in three people treated in casualty departments in Wales for assault injuries is the victim of domestic violence, shocking new research has revealed. The research, carried out by the University of Glamorgan also found that a quarter of the victims of domestic violence who were treated at Prince Charles Hospital, in Merthyr Tydfil, were male. But similar work carried out in Israel suggests this is just the tip of the iceberg as equal numbers of men as women are assaulted within the home. (…)

TOKYO — Human rights group Amnesty International Japan has opened a photo exhibit in Tokyo featuring pictures of women in war-torn areas such as Iraq and Afghanistan. The exhibit, running Nov 2-18 at United Nations University, is part of Amnesty's "Stop! Violence Against Women" campaign, which seeks to end various forms of violence against women including domestic violence and wartime rape. It features images of women in conflict areas such as Iraq, the Palestinian territories, Chechnya and Afghanistan taken by eight Japanese photojournalists.

In 1873, in County Durham, Mrs Mary Ann Cotton was accused of poisoning her step-son, the eight year old Charles Edward. (…) Mary Ann Cotton was hanged and it was believed she had murdered three husbands and 15 of her children! Mary Ann is forgotten while Jack the Ripper, who killed half the number of victims, is remembered. Strange.

Senator Ann Cools is hot. Cools has won the Toronto Sun's 10 Top Women poll with almost 50% of the votes -- and her victory is attributed to her fight to help men. Voters from across the country -- mostly men -- cast ballots for Cools, who spearheaded legislation giving fathers equal access to their children after a divorce. "I'm as mesmerized as anyone else.
